Faulted rocks in the crater rim at Wemding quarry
Photo: G. Osinski, University of Western Ontario
Location: 500 meters inside the east crater rim
Scale: Height of the cliff is 40 meters
About 1 kilometer south of the town of Wemding, there is a large Malm limestone quarry. Here, we can clearly see the effects of the impact event: originally flat-lying Malm limestones were fractured, tilted, and faulted, during collapse of the crater rim. This inward collapse of large kilometer-sized blocks of rock formed the megablock zone of the Ries structure. Our next stop is a quarry in the village of Otting
