Ruins from the old silica mining operation
As we ascend back up to the rim, there is a lot of metal and woody debris on the ground. Some of this was left behind by the drilling operation at Barringer Crater in the 1900’s. However, most of what we see today, including the buildings still standing, are part of the old silica mine. In the left photo, the building to the left was a storage area where bags of silica were kept. The building on the right was the workers quarters. This mine wasn’t very successful and only operated for a few years during the 1940’s.
