Aerial photograph of impact ejecta deposits of the Haughton structure
Photo: G. Osinski, University of Western Ontario Location: Inside the southwestern rim of Haughton
Scale:
New geologic mapping of the Haughton impact structure by geologist Gordon Osinski has revealed the presence of proximal impact ejecta deposits near the southern rim of the Haughton structure. Two main types of ejecta have been recognized: (1) pale gray impact melt breccias similar, but not identical, to those seen in the interior of Haughton (see stops 2, 6, and 8), and (2) pale yellow to brown impact ejecta deposits (see picture below).

Photo: G. Osinski, University of Western Ontario Scale: Width of the large block above the person is approximately 20 meters
This photograph demonstrates the sheer power of impact events. The large blocks of rock above the person are up to 20 meters across and were hurled here from the center of the crater, where they were originally 700 meters below the surface before the impact event!
