As you can see from these pictures, the layers of rock near the tops of the canyon walls are nearly all horizontal. They are sedimentary rocks, primarily limestones. These rocks were laid down approximately 380-450 million years ago when the region was covered by shallow tropical seas. The rocks approximately 15 kilometers to the west of this location were also horizontal when the impact occurred 23 million years ago. Keep this in mind as we go from stop to stop on our Haughton tour. If you notice any rocks that are NOT horizontal, then its safe to assume that these rocks were deformed and moved around by the impact event.
