At this stop there are abundant sandstone fragments in the ejecta blanket. These rocks are from the Coconino Formation, which forms the deepest section of the target sequence at Barringer Crater. In other words, these sandstones were excavated from as much as 100-200 meters in depth and thrown out as the crater was being formed. Before we continue along the rim, we’ll take a slight detour and take a closer look at the ejecta blanket outside the crater.
