Getting to the Haughton Impact Structure

FIRST LEG: FLIGHT TO RESOLUTE BAY, CORNWALLIS ISLAND, NUNAVUT

Canada Location Map

The Haughton impact structure is located on Devon Island, Canada (75° 22' N, 89° 41' W), in one of the most isolated regions on Earth: the Canadian High Arctic far above the Arctic Circle. This makes getting there a challenge!

The first leg of the journey to Haughton is aboard a commercial flight from Montreal, Canada to Resolute Bay, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut -- see pictures. These flights run from the east via Iqaluit, and from the west via Cambridge Bay.

The second leg is a short flight aboard a Twin Otter plane to Devon Island-- see pictures. Our final destination is, of course, the Haughton impact structure.

Before touching down on Devon Island, we fly right above the Haughton impact structure to get a birdseye view (above right). The crater diameter is approximately 24 kilometers. The Twin Otter plane will land on a dirt airstrip right at basecamp. To see the places you'll visit on your virtual tour of Haughton, click the link below for the tour map.
