This week’s image is ʻAkiapōlāʻau (Hemignathus munroi), photographed at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island of Hawai’i. ʻAkiapōlāʻau is an endangered species of Hawaiian honeycreeper and occupy the woodpecker niche.
PSI Research Scientist Vishnu Reddy has been selected as the December Nature Photographer of the Month by Mongabay.com, a leading environmental and conservation news website.
An example of his photographic work will be posted each Sunday and stay up for a week. A total of five images will be displayed on Mongabay.com’s Facebook page throughout the month. The Facebook page, found at https://www.facebook.com/mongabay, has more than 110,000 followers.
