Non PSI Personnel: Umesh Haritashya (Co-Principal Investigator, University of Dayton)
Overall Objectives
This proposed work will result in or assist five papers moving to publication:(1) “Oscillating Glacier Trend in the Nanga Parbat region of Western Himalaya,” a research paper about highly dynamic glacier processes in Pakistan.(2) “Validation of GLAM BioLith RT modeling software for turbid glacial lakes and other natural water reflectance.” This is a follow-on paper to a HiMAT publication (Schiassi et al., 2019), which was a core contribution by our project. This paper will entail a small amount of research time from Kargel (for field work and associated lab work).(3) “Hazard Assessment of the Lower Barun Glacial Lake using Hydrodynamic Modeling, Nepal Himalaya.” This concerns an extremely hazardous and critically risky lake that was the subject of two HiMAT publications (Haritashya et al. 2018— where publication charges were funded out of Haritashya’s professorship funds from the University of Dayton; and Kirschbaum et al. 2019) and a season of field work in Nepal funded by Kargel’s HiMAT project.(4) “Glacio-hydrology over the Himalayas: Status and Perspectives.” This is a review paper by Azam et al., and it follows from a sister review paper about glacier mass balance in the Himalaya-Karakoram that was already published and has a very high citation number (Azam et al. 2018).(5) “Remote Sensing of Debris-Covered Glaciers: Review of Mapping and Monitoring Status, Challenges and Future Directions.”
