Project Description

The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday, 19 January 2006 and completed a successful fly-by of Pluto in July 2015. The first Kuiper belt Extended Mission (KEM/KEM 1) phase completed a successful fly-by of a Kuiper Belt Object on January 1, 2019. The KEMl + proposal extended the KEMl phase by one year through FY22. Subsequently, the second extended mission (KEM2) has been informally proposed and approved by NASA. The award is anticipated post-formal proposal in the early months ofFY23 to extend this mission through FY24.

KEM2 Technical Elements of Work
a. Participate in science team telecoms or meetings as requested by the Science
Operations Center team.
b. Participate in science team telecoms or meetings as requested by the Principal Investigator (Pl) or his designee.
c. Develop and maintain software as needed to analyze science data from New Horizons in coordination with the PI.
d. Develop software as requested by the Science Operations Center (SOC) manager to support data processing within the SOC and deliver the software to the SOC manager.
e. Analyze New Horizons science data in coordination with the PI and prepare publications based on the results of the analysis.
f. Attend scientific and engineering meetings and prepare and present materials as requested by the PI.
g. Support anomaly resolution of instrument problems if requested by the PI.
h. Perform special modeling or studies as requested by the PI.
1. Participate in Education and Public Outreach activities as directed by the PI.
J. If designated a TTL, coordinate science team activities for the specified Theme Team.
k. Support the operations and planning of operations for the Ralph instrument.
1. Participate in preparation of a third extended mission proposal if requested by the PI.

KEM2 Programmatic Elements of Work
a. Submit monthly email reports of New Horizons activities when such activities take place. During months when there are no such activities, no report is necessary.
b. Submit timely monthly invoice to SwRI via e-mail at [email protected] using existing institutional invoicing systems by the 4th of the month, or when available from business office.
