Project Description

Co-I Williams’ role on the Mastcam/MARDI investigation will involve acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of data, and Mastcam/MARDI instrument management. In support of mission operations, she will plan and advocate for Mastcam/MARDI observations, in coordination with other rover instruments, and may serve in staffed operational roles including Geology Theme Lead (GEO STL) and Keeper of the Plan (GEO KOP) positions. Specific activities associated with these roles include:

(1) planning and documentation of instrument observations through both the strategic and tactical operational process,
(2) participation in MSL science team science discussions and working groups to contribute to rover planning and intra-instrument data synthesis,
(3) interpretation of image data, including synthesis with rover and orbital datasets, to identify the sediment transport history and assess the conditions of environmental transitions recorded in the sedimentary rock record,
(4) documentation of science results through preparation of annotated images and text for presentations at scientific conferences and publication in peer-reviewed manuscripts, and
(5) as Deputy Principle Investigator, she will facilitate communication between MSL management and MSSS regarding instrument activities to achieve a balance between maximizing scientific return and maintaining instrument capabilities.
