Overall Objectives
Purchase of MATLAB antenna modeling software to address the unique design challenges presented by simultaneous Faraday rotation sounding of the heliosphere in the MOST/FETCH instrument suite. The design requirements require a log periodic antenna (a fractal antenna with a 30 degree beam width and wide frequency response) for transmitting. What needs to be done for the antenna design is as follows: (1) Determine if the transmitting antenna can be used for receiving simultaneously or if a 3-axis dipole should be utilized. (2) Select signal generation hardware and the receiver processing hardware based on the following performance requirements (these are liable to be adjusted based on successful strategies to achieve the final result): (A) simultaneous polarized wave transmission of 3 or 4 frequencies between 10 and 100 MHz; (B) simultaneous observing of polarized EM waves at 6 or 8 frequencies between 10 and 100 MHz.We require state-of-the-art antenna design software to address these design requirements, specifically specialized toolboxes in MATLAB, a program utilized by engineers and researchers all over the world. The Antenna Toolbox enables designing the antenna, varying its structure, size, substrate, and other parameters. It will provide information on the antenna's axial ratio, beam width, charge distribution, current distribution, embedded
electrical/magnetic fields, input/scan impedance, radiation pattern/phase, return loss, and its voltage standing-wave ratio.
