Project Description
We propose to convene a 2nd RAID Science Planning Workshop in the spring of 2024 to support research community use of the Rapid Access Ice Drill (RAID) in Antarctica. Such a workshop will build on a well-attended earlier workshop convened in La Jolla in 2017, and it will take advantage of the growing momentum provided by successful field testing of RAID in Antarctica 2019-20 and ongoing research activities of the NSF-supported Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX). The 2017 RAID Science Planning Workshop in La Jolla successfully assembled a broad, multi-disciplinary group of scientists to identify critical science problems that can be addressed with this novel rapid drilling technology. The workshop further sought to identify unique synergies between disciplines, and it developed a long-term community-based research plan to serve a broad range of scientific problems.
