PSI Associate Research Scientist Kevin Webster monitors the chemical composition of cave air just outside of the Cave of the Bells in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson, Arizona. Caves breathe and their air is typically enriched in CO2 compared to the background atmosphere due to interaction with microbial life in the cave. This is part of a project which may lead to a means for detecting evidence of life by monitoring air outside the entrances of Martian caves.
