Dr. Samarasinha’s research interests are focused on the study of comets and other small bodies of the solar system. His studies include understanding the physics and chemistry of cometary nuclei and comae, including rotational studies of nuclei and interpretation of coma morphologies, the structural properties of small bodies in the solar system, the rotational and physical properties of Trans-Neptunian objects, and the physical properties of asteroids.
Dr. Samarasinha obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Colombo, graduating with First Class Honours in 1981. He received his Master’s degree in Astronomy from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1985, and his PhD in 1992. He has been a research mentor for many undergraduates and graduate students. He is active in outreach activities, and a co-investigator on many outreach grants.
