I have spent a great deal of time in Hawaii. In 1964, when I was a graduate student, my professor, Gerard Kuiper, assigned me to spend six summer weeks atop Mauna Kea, on the "big island" of Hawaii, testing the mountain for a possible astronomical observatory. We found excellent results and years later this became the premier observatory in the world. In the 1970s and 1980s, I made many observing runs with Dale Cruikshank and Dave Tholen at Mauna Kea. In recent years I have been teaching a summer course at the University of Hawaii Hilo campus and have a residence at Punalu'u. These ventures have given me many opportunities to make painting expeditions around the islands, especially the island of Hawaii.

777 -- Dusk at Mauna Loa.  This view was painted during the 2015 conjunction of Moon and Venus (with Jupiter prominent as well). The graceful curve of 14,000-foot Mauna Loa volcano dominates the skyline from points on most of the southern half of the “Big Island” of Hawaii. My painting site was a few miles south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park headquarters, near milepost 33 on Hawaii Highway 11. Acrylic on 16x22 inch acid-free board.  (Copyright William K. Hartmann).

721 -- Guardians of the Gate.  The gate opens into a narrow road leading to the upper slopes of Mauna Loa volcano (the dark slopes brooding under clouds in the background), in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The flowers, the red-blooming ohia trees, and the pillars constructed of basaltic boulders are typical of old, upcountry Hawaii. Acrylic on acid-free board, 11 x 14 inches.  (Copyright William K. 671 -- In the Koa tree grove at The Volcano Art Center.  Hawaii: Grove of Koa Trees in front of the Volcano Art Center gallery, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the “Big Island” of Hawaii. 670 -- Lehua blossom.  Close-up study of the red blossom of the Ohia tree. According to Hawaiian legend, a Hawaiian warrior and his beloved met a tragic end, but he was transformed into the Ohia tree and they were reunited when she was transformed into to the Lehua blossom. 560 HAWAII Kapoho Pastorale 2002559 HAWAII Where the Lava meets the Sea 2002

560 -- Kapoho pastorale.  This rural part of Hawaii, at the east tip of the big Island is on the east rift zone of Kilauea volcano. The feature in front of the sea is an eroded volcanic cone. Another nearby cone erupted in 1960, and formed a field of craters when ejected boulders landed in a smooth cinder-covered field. I fell in love with the area when I studied those craters as a graduate student. Acrylic, painted from life on 8 x 16 inch acid-free board.  (Copyright William K. Hartmann).

559 -- Where the lava meets the sea. This painting was made along the east coast of the “Big Island” of Hawaii, where the coastline is defined by geologically young lava flows. The Beach at Halape

-- The Beach at Halape;  Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  This beautiful beach can be reached by hiking down the cliff-like fault scarp of Kilauea volcano.  In 1975, 32 people (a Boy Scout troop) were camping when a major earthquake dropped the beach by about 3.5 meters and created a tsunami 26 feet high. The wave swept the campers inland and two scouts were killed.  The original beach is now underwater, and the bay in this painting was created mostly during the earthquake.   The painting was made mostly during an on-site camping trip, and finished later from slides.   (Copyright William K.
