"Emplacement of Compound Lava Flow Fields"

David Crown

Volcanism is a fundamental process shaping the surfaces of rocky planetary bodies in the solar system. Numerous lava flow fields have been identified on Venus, the Moon, Mars, and Io. The morphologic characteristics and remote sensing signatures of terrestrial analogues are used to develop methodologies for analysis of planetary features. Current research on Hawaiian volcanoes utilizes a combination of field investigations, remote sensing, statistical analyses, and computer simulations to understand flow field development. The combination of remote sensing data sets at visible, thermal, and radar wavelengths along with high-precision spatial control and detailed topographic information for the Earth provide important insights and tools for studying planetary volcanism.
