The Moon is a Planet Too: Lunar Science and Robotic Exploration

Friday, June 12, 2009
Barbara
Cohen (NASA Marshall Space Flight Center)

The Moon is a witness to 4.5 billion years of solar system history, recording that history more completely and more clearly than any other planetary body. Lunar science encompasses early planetary evolution and differentiation, lava eruptions and fire fountains, impact scars throughout time, and billions of years of volatile input. I will cover the main outstanding issues in lunar science today and the mission opportunities made possible by renewed interest in robotic and human lunar exploration.

Dr. Cohen serves as the project scientist for the US nodes of the International Lunar Network, a science mission to provide geophysical information about the Moon's interior structure and composition.
