THE FIRST CATACLYSMIC
VARIABLE DISCOVERED WITH THE FAINT SKY VARIABILITY SURVEY

The first FSVS discovered cataclysmic variable is shown here in a finding chart.  The blue arrows mark the spot, seen here as a single point of light, but actually consisting of a binary pair of stars.  The right panel shows the object's spectrum. Detailed examination of the light curve and the spectrum has shown that the binary has an orbital period near 3.2 hours, making the separation between the two stars equal to about 1 solar radius. The very blue color of the star (seen as the increasing short wavelength flux in the spectrum) is due to the presence of a hot accretion disk in the system, a typical property of this type of cataclysmic variable.
