This is Apollo 16 metric camera frame 0161, showing the area near the A16 landing site. Unknown at the time of the A16 mission, the strongest isolated magnetic anomaly on the Moon is located in this area and modeling carried out by PSI scientist Nic Richmond has shown that the source of the anomaly (red circle) correlates with a high albedo region of the Descartes Mountains (DM). Similar correlations between magnetization and albedo have been identified elsewhere on the Moon. Working in collaboration with Lon Hood at the University of Arizona and Dave Blewett at NovaSol, Nic is using the Lunar Prospector magnetometer data from 1999 to produce a global map of the crustal magnetization, with the goal of further investigating the association between crustal magnetic anomalies and albedo.
