Water as a Solvent for Life - An Informal Introduction

Wednesday, November 6, 2013
Jennifer
Grier

The question "why water?" comes up frequently in educational settings, both formal and informal. The focus of the space program's search for life has long been centered on water. The public wants to know why water is so important, why it is associated with life, and if something else could serve the same purpose. This informal talk will touch upon: the growing theory of life, the elements available for life, alternate chemistry, potential solvents, and possible habitats for life in our solar system, while examining the question "does life outside of Earth need water?"
