*MEETING: Fifth Workshop on Catastrophic
Disruption in the Solar System
*PLACE: Timberline Lodge, Oregon
*DATES: July 1-3, 1998
*DEDICATION: Dr. Eugene Shoemaker and Fabbio Migliorini
The format of the meeting, in keeping with the workshop spirit, will allow ample time for discussion. The main themes of the workshop are:
* Scientific Issues of Catastrophic Disruption
* Astronomical and Meteoritical Observations
* Laboratory Experiments
* From the Lab to Nature: Scaling Algorithms and
Hydrocode Results
The registration fee will be $75 (U.S.) per workshop attendee which will include the banquet, continental breakfast every morning and a pre-workshop registration and welcome reception on Tuesday, June 30. The registration fee can be paid at the conference or returned with the registration form. Checks on U.S. banks should be made payable to the Planetary Science Institute. Unfortunately, we are not set up to accept credit cards.
We have blocked 30 rooms at Timberline Lodge: 23 are regular rooms at $95/night; two are corner rooms at $125/night and five are fireplace rooms at $170/night. Most rooms can accommodate 2 people easily; additional persons are $15/person. If you would like assistance in arranging to share a room, please indicate this on the registration form.
ROOM RESERVATIONS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF INDIVIDUALS. ALL ROOMS NOT RESERVED BY MAY 2 WILL BE RETURNED TO TIMBERLINE FOR OTHER GUESTS.
Reservations may be booked by phone (800-547-1406; 503-272-3311) or fax (503-272-3710). All major credit cards are accepted.
We will likely not all be able to stay in the lodge, so we have listed below some other options, located in and around Government Camp, which is about two miles from the lodge, and about 1000 feet lower elevation. July is "peak" season, due to the availability of year-round skiing and other recreational offerings of the area, so BOOK EARLY. Most of the accommodations in and around Government Camp are houses or condos, so you may want to share with others. If you would like assistance in sharing accommodations with other attendees, indicate this on your registration form.
Mt. Hood Inn (800-443-7777; 503-272-3205; Fax 503-272-3307) A regular hotel, rates start at $125/night, single or double occupancy.
Cascade Property Management (503-622-5688; Fax 503-622-6710)
This company manages a number of privately owned cabins, condos, etc. Rates start at about $120/night for a 2-bedroom unit, up to about $200 for a 3-bedroom, 2-bath unit with full kitchen.
Thunderhead Lodge (800-859-8493; Phone & Fax 503-272-3368)
Formerly owned by Timberline Lodge, this older property has been outfitted condo-style, with studio units at $89, one bedroom at $117, two bedrooms at $140, and three bedroom at $210 (the latter includes fireplace, Jacuzzi, etc.).
We have not blocked any of these lodgings, so it is strictly first come, first served. Since July is high season, you are advised to make arrangements as soon as possible.
A registration form is attached so please return it as soon as possible, but no later than April 15.

MEETING LOGISTICS:
Timberline Lodge is a Depression-era skiing lodge built by the WPA at the timberline (6000 ft - 2000 m) elevation on Mt. Hood, the highest volcanic peak in Oregon. In addition to the location featuring hiking trails, year-round skiing, and the possibility to climb to the summit, the lodge itself is a masterpiece of its era. A newer wing of the lodge contains meeting facilities, which can accommodate our group of up to about 50.
Several dining facilities, ranging from a full service restaurant to fast food and bars are contained in the same building, with a couple others in a nearby day-skiing facility. The latter keeps most of the skiers apart from the overnight lodge, so we will not have a mob of skiers milling about where we will be meeting. For further information, visit the Timberline Lodge home page:
http://www.teleport.com/~timlodge/
TRANSPORTATION:
The lodge is located about 60 miles from Portland International Airport (PDX). A shuttle service is available for $18/person, by advance arrangement. If you want to take the shuttle, please let us know your expected arrival time and we will try block shuttles for groups of attendees so no one has to wait too long. You may need a car if you stay in one of the accommodations away from the lodge. If you plan to rent a car and can share rides, or would prefer to stay in Government Camp without a car and need rides to the meeting each day, please indicate this on the registration form.
WINE TOUR:
The Willamette Valley of Oregon has become famous in the last decade as a premier producing area for Pinot Noir, the great varietal wine of Burgundy. There are now dozens of producers of premium Pinot Noir in the valley extending south ~150 km from Portland, mostly concentrated in the first 60 km or so. We could arrange a tour of two or three of the closer wineries on Friday afternoon, or for the real enthusiasts, we could arrange an overnight (perhaps with a "winemaker's dinner" at one winery) and continue on into Saturday, visiting perhaps half a dozen more. Please note your interest in either of these options on the registration form.

FOR THE MEETING:
TRAVEL GRANTS:
NASA has confirmed funding for travel grants for this meeting. If you need support to attend the meeting, please return the attached application to Elaine Owens, psikey@psi.edu. Preference will be given to those from economically disadvantaged countries and to young scientists who would not be able to attend without support. We estimate that 5-7 travel grants will be available. We would plan on reimbursing successful applicants at the time of the meeting.

DIRECTIONS TO TIMBERLINE LODGE:
From the North:
Whether you are on I-5 going South or I-205 going South, take I-84 going East. From I-84, take the Troutdale exit and at the end of the exit ramp, go through the light, and proceed to the next light and turn Right. Follow that road past Halsey, past Stark, past Division, until you reach an intersection with four-way stop signs. This intersection is Powell Valley road. Turn right onto Powell, and at the next light, turn Left onto Highway 26. The landmarks at this intersection are a Fred Meyer on the right, and an Exxon gas station on the right. You will stay on Highway 26 through Sandy, Welches, Zig Zag, Rhododendron, and Government Camp. The Timberline Access road is a left hand turn off of Highway 26, just after passing Government Camp.
From the South:
From I-5 going North, exit onto I-205 going North. This interchange is South of Tualatin. Follow I-205 going North past Oregon City and watch for the "Estacada/Highway 224 & 212" exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn Right. After a few miles, Highways 224 & 212 will split. You will head towards Damascus and Boring. In Boring, you will turn right at the marked intersection, so you can intersect with Highway 26. Highway 26 East will take you through Sandy, Welches, Zig Zag, Rhododendron, and Government Camp. The Timberline Access road is a left-hand turn off of Highway 26, just after passing Government Camp.
