Dr. Spitale is currently carrying out a research campaign with the objective of understanding the processes that shape Saturn's rings.  

As an associate of the Cassini imaging team, he uses spacecraft imaging and occultation observations to analyze the configurations of various ring features in order to compare them with dynamical models that allow the ring's properties to be inferred.

Other research interests include: Asteroid thermal modeling and orbital evolution, asteroid hazard mitigation.
