My First 100-mile Ultra
July, 2006 These are a set of pictures I took while running my first 100-mile ultramarathon. I took the camera as a way of making sure I had enough breaks while running the first 50 miles (or so). The event was the Tahoe Rim Trail 100, the first time the course had ever been used for a 100 miler. The selling line for the event was "A glimpse of heaven, a taste of hell." There certainly were some fine views along the way. I am still trying to evaluate which is tougher, the 100 miler or the 24-hour rogaine. There is more distance in the 100 miler, however it is not as mentally tiring as trying to navigate your way cross country with ten feet of visibility at 3am. Each is a lot of fun.
10 miles down, 90 to go.
Onebrown puddle.
This is the nasty little loop added to make the 50 milecourse.
You can tell I've stuck been Arizona lately.
The first glimpse of the 25/75 mile aidstation.
35 miles down, 65 to go.
Looking towards Snow Valley whileclimbing the flank of Marlette Peak.
The prize for the aid station withthe best poetry goes to....
Long way to run
The last 7 miles of the course are all basically downhill.
There were not so many rocks to twist your ankle on the trail.
The sun getting low over Marlette Lakeon the second loop.
Watching the sunset over Lake Marlettefrom above.
I passed this guy at mile 57, 15 hours into the event.
Trees and lakes lit by the setting sun.
Get ready to get the lights out.
