The CRISM View of Hydrated Silicates and Implications for Aqueous Alteration on Noachian Mars
Bethany Ehlmann
(Geological Sciences, Brown University)
Data recently returned from MRO's Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars show hydrated silicates are pervasive in the Southern Highlands and more mineralogically diverse than previously known. Kaolinite, chlorite, illite/muscovite, zeolite, and hydrated silica are found within Nili Fossae and other terrains across the planet. An overview of the most recent findings from MRO and hypotheses for the setting of aqueous alteration will be discussed.
